Snap a Memory on a Wildlife Refuge
What if a Bird Sing's and No One Hear's It?
Dr. Robert Lewis Bacon. We are sad to announce the passing of Dr. Bob Bacon at age 90, after a lengthy period of ill
health. Bob was one of the first volunteers at Haystack Rock and was an original member of the “Puffin Club” which preceded the Haystack Rock Awareness Program. He was retired from the
Medical School faculty at O.H.S.U., having been a mentor to many of our most capable Oregon
physicians. Bob is probably best remembered as the driving force behind the 1967 “Beach Bill”
which defined the Oregon public beaches at 16 feet above sea level at the vegetation line and
halted business and commercial encroachment. Bob was an original advisor to the Friends
Board who loved the beach and the Rock. He will obviously be missed but we can treasure the
memories of his caring.
HRAP welcomes Laura 'NALA’ CARDILLO as the new HRAP Coordinator
Nala Cardillo who has been selected by
the City of Cannon Beach to be the new coordinator of the Haystack Rock Awareness Program.
Nala is a Princeton grad who has had a tremendous variety of experiences: U.S. Army
Intelligence Captain, Project Manager for an international financial services firm, Assistant Field
Director for studies of national Head Start programs, Naturalist and all-round assistant for
WildQuest in the Bahamas. She comes recently from Ashland, Oregon, where she has been
heavily involved in nature and birding related educational programs with Jefferson Nature Center, Klamath Bird Observatory and North Mountain Park.
Nala was the consensus choice from over 70 applicants. She will
assume her position March 1, 2009, and is enthusiastic about moving to the northern Oregon
Coast.
